Stores I searched for pretzel rings: Super Walmart, Ultra, Hometown Shop and Save, Jewel, Best Supermarket, Kroger, and Target. They are nowhere to be found. I have been looking for pretzel rings for the past month. If anyone knows where to find them, please let me know. After pretzel searching on high shelves and low shelves, as well as store brands and generic brands, I decided to improvise. The classic pretzel shape has three closed sections. Although they are not round like a circle, I figured they could fit a Hershey Kiss inside. It was worth a shot at least.
This was another pretty simple recipe. It would have been a cinch if we had found pretzel rings. In the beginning, I was breaking each pretzel so that it only had one closed shape remaining. This most closely resembled the ring shape that I was looking for. Doing it this way was taking forever, and required that I eat 2/3 of every pretzel. I thought, “Why not just use the entire pretzel and put three Hershey Kisses in each?” So that is what Grams and I ended up doing. They certainly didn’t turn out as “cute” as pretzel rings would have been, but they tasted exactly the same. And I have never been one to care how the dessert looks to my eyes, only how it tastes on my lips! When Grams and I pushed the M&Ms into the pretzel rings, we had to make sure that the chocolate melted to the pretzel. This was really the only modification we had to make for using regular pretzels instead of rings.
There was plenty for Grams and I to talk about this morning while baking. Yesterday, we were able to see all of the Ahlden ladies at a baby shower. Most kids look forward to the holiday when they are able to move from the “kids table” to the “grown-ups table”. Not me. Although I am welcome to eat at the adult table, I still prefer to sit with my cousins’ children at the “kids table”. Let’s get real; our little girls’ table is way more fun and entertaining. I heard all about my five year old cousin’s “boyfriend” who, for some reason, is bald. I SWORE I wouldn’t tell anyone his name though, especially not her dad who says she can’t date her pre-school classmates! We are usually the loudest table, mostly because we laugh a lot. Added bonus, the kids table is always allowed to eat first. We also get to pick our pieces of cake first which assures that we get the ones with the most frosting. Why would I want to sit at the boring adult table!
Grams lives for family gatherings. Although she isn’t involved in the action as much as she was when I was a kid, she loves to sit back and watch all the kids running around. While we were baking our pretzel rings, Grams and I talked about how cute all of the great-grand girls looked in their summer dresses yesterday. We commented on how fancy and grown-up little girls feel when they put on their party dresses. These great-grand girls are all my second cousins. Even for me, it’s hard to see them as young women and not little girls. It’s hard to believe that a couple of them are in middle school, and the oldest great-grandchild will be receiving her driver’s license in a few months! Grams can never believe how fast they all grow up. My favorite comment of the day was while Grams and I were talking about the benefit of having a large family. There is bound to be someone your age there to play with. Grams said, “Yes, we have little ones, medium, and big kids now too.” Just like T-shirt sizes….small-medium-large. J
School is just around the corner and after school snacks are a must. Idea for moms and dads: these pretzel rings would be an easy after school treat for kids. Who doesn’t love the sweet and salty combo!
Chocolate Pretzel Rings – Kristin Johnson
1 pkg Pretzel Rings
2 pkg Hershey Kisses, Hershey Hugs, or any preferred chocolate candy
1 pkg M&Ms
Heat oven to 275 degrees. Place pretzel rings on cookie sheet. Put Hershey candy in the center of each pretzel ring. Bake for 2 minutes- Just long enough to soften chocolate but not melt it. Remove from oven and place 1 or 2 M&Ms in the center of each candy and press down lightly. Cool in refrigerator for 10 minutes. This can be used as a holiday treat for all holidays by using holiday colored M&Ms.
